The climate bonus will be paid out again this year to all those entitled to it in Austria – automatically and without an application. Payments via bank transfer will start on Monday, September 2, 2024.
Between 145 and 290 euros
This year, the climate bonus’s basic amount is 145 euros. Including the regional compensation, the payment levels are 145, 195, 245, and 290 euros. More than 90 percent of all eligible recipients will receive the climate bonus directly.
A total of 8,688,437 people are entitled to the 2024 climate bonus during the year. Of these, 7,841,515 people will receive their climate bonus directly into their account from September 2. This is 6 percent more than in the year the climate bonus was introduced in 2022, when around 7.41 million people were paid directly. The climate bonus is planned to be delivered by post for 846,922 people in the fall. That is around 400,000 voucher letters or around 30 percent fewer postal deliveries than when the Climate Bonus 2022 was introduced.
Credit transfers start
Transfers will start on September 2, 2024. This year, there will be around 2.1 million daily transfers, which is faster than ever before. In comparison, in the first year of payment, there were still 300,000 transactions per day. With the faster pace, transfers will be completed in the course of the first week of this year.
At the same time, postal deliveries will also start in the first week of September. Since the start of the climate bonus, the number of vouchers sent by post has been reduced by around a third, corresponding to a saving of around 400,000 letters. Around 847,000 postal deliveries will be made in fall 2024. These will again be RSa/RSb letters, delivered personally so that the climate bonus reaches the people entitled to it. This takes around 8 weeks.
About the Climate Bonus 2024
The climate bonus is a compensatory measure, a unique model in Europe and – together with CO2 pricing – an important component of the eco-social tax reform. The base amount of the climate bonus is 145 euros in 2024. Including the regional compensation, the payment levels are therefore 145, 195, 245 and 290 euros. As in previous years, it will be paid out again this year to all people who have had their main residence in Austria for more than six months – automatically and without an application. This means that people in Austria benefit directly from the eco-social tax reform—those who protect the climate save on CO2 pricing and end up with a particularly large climate bonus.
“With the eco-social tax reform and the climate bonus, we have firmly anchored climate protection in the Austrian tax system. The climate bonus is there for everyone and ensures climate-friendly behavior pays off. The better we protect our climate, the more we have left over in the end,” says Climate Protection Minister Leonore Gewessler.
She continued: “The payment of the climate bonus is one of the country’s largest digitalization projects. Over 7.8 million citizens will receive their climate bonus directly into their account within a few days from September 2, 2024 – without having to do anything. That’s something to be proud of across Europe.”
In a nutshell
